The church of Saints Cosmas and Damian

A unique and precious historical and architectural treasure.

The Church of Saints Cosmas and Damian, located on the end of the historic port of Marina Corta, is one of the oldest ecclesiastical sites of the Aeolian islands.

When, in 1544, the pirate Barbarossa, the terror of the Mediterranean, destroyed the island, there was still no trace of this building: this is confirmed by cartographers of the period, first of all the abbot Maurando that includes, however, on the maps of the time the Church of St. Joseph that was in front.

Its construction, therefore, dates from around 1545: Lipari was reborn around his new Church.

Probably rebuilt on the original site of an early Christian temple, the underground (the crypt is a space of 200 square meters) were once the local tithes.

The original name of the structure is not the one with which it is stated today: according to testimony in 1736, at the time it was dedicated to Our Lady of the Snows and to the Souls in Purgatory.

A double name not certainly casual, as Our Lady of the Snows is the one who, according to the specific cult, gives refreshment to the souls of penitents.

Around the process of cultural and architectural appreciation were coagulated in recent years the energies of the most vital forces of Lipari people.

It must be said that the restoration by the Superintendence of Cultural Heritage started in 1994, with alternated fortunes, but only after 2000s that this project took off, thanks to the Association Saints Cosmas and Damian (www.marinacorta.com), which deals exclusively with the restoration and enhancement of the site.

The same which established the Fish Festival on the occasion of the feast of the two saints.

Three days, those between 24 and 26 September, where you can taste the flavours of the island (lipari salad, fried fish, typical sweets and Malvasia), and the proceeds are destined for the work of restoration of the Church.
